We could all benefit from having our own internal coach- our own inner voice that’s there to motivate, support and encourage us. Think about the coach of a sports team amping up their team before the game. Some coaches are so inspiring and intense that they’ve been credited with their team’s win. Their words can influence a bad team to be good or a good team to be even better. Now that’s a lot of power!

Now think about our self-talk, the things we say to ourselves in our head. Most of us have a very negative and potentially damaging inner dialogue. We say things in our own mind that we would never even think of saying to another human being because it’s often too cruel and judgmental. We call ourselves names. We put ourselves down. We minimize ourselves. We criticize ourselves.
Imagine if this is what your team heard before the game: “I don’t think you’re going to win today. You just don’t have it in you. You’re not as fast as them. You’re not as strong as them. You’re not a smart as them so why even try. We could just forfeit now and save yourself from the embarrassment.” As opposed to: “You can do this! Prove that you want this more than they do. Prove that you have more drive, more stamina, more passion and more heart. This is your chance to show them what you’re made of! You’ve earned a right to be here and you’ve earned this moment. Take it all in and be proud of yourself and let’s take home the win!”
I think you’d be more likely to succeed with the second coach’s speech rather than the first one. This is what we need to have within us whether we’re about to compete, preparing for a presentation, going on a job interview, getting ready to go skydiving, about to propose or ready to give birth. What we say to ourselves in our mind we eventually believe so it better be positive!
Life is tough and we can often be beaten down by the world around us so we can’t afford to leave this support in other people’s hands to do for us. We have to can take control of our own lives and do it for ourselves. If we don’t take care for ourselves we can’t expect others to. So when you need a little extra motivation step up and be your own coach.
Try these affirmations. You can start by saying them silently in your head but saying them out loud is more powerful. Saying them to yourself while looking in the mirror is even more powerful. It might feel uncomfortable at first but, just like anything else, the more you practice it and the easier it becomes.
